The Traveler

In the video game Journey, you set out on a trek to a mountain in the distance as an unnamed little character known simply as the Traveler. In this game, scarves feature prominently. As the main character advances, his scarf grows in length allowing for increased flight. It is a beautiful feature of the game. This is a game that successfully argues the “video games as art” debate. The soundtrack is performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. I wish I had this one on my shelf.

A few years back, I wrote about my adventures on the Long Island Yarn Crawl. It was a 3 part post because I visited so many great shops. In the last and final post, I spoke about The Knitting Garden in Huntington and the amazing door prize I won. For a trip down memory lane, click here. 

Fast forward…

The kit included in the gift was for Quench by Lisa Richardson. This is a light-as-a-feather scarf knit with Rowan Cashmere Haze, a yarn spun from alpaca, cashmere and silk. Ermagerd! Remember the TV show “I Dream of Jeannie”? I imagine the inside of her bottle decorated with pillows and throws made with this stuff. It is divine! 

The scarf is knit with two strands held together, creating very subtle color blocks. The finished scarf is 85″. This crazy length combined with the airy nature of the fabric lends itself to much wrapping around the neck. As an aside, once you start wearing this scarf, it curls in on itself a lot! It looks like one long narrow tube. I would definitely knit a wider selvedge if I were to make it again.

Carver footnote: We have moved beyond the yarn eating phase. 

Another project off the needles is the Constellate Hat by Hunter Hammersen. Her patterns are clever and visually appealing, but this was not one of my favorite knits. I really did not enjoy working on this as much as I had hoped and it has nothing to do with the pattern. Maybe it was the choice of yarn? The hat is warm and the squish factor is high, but making the elongated stitches proved a bit tedious.

This hat was knit with Fully Spun 3 ply Sport, a deep jewel-toned marled yarn in the colorway Orion, and Cloudborn Fibers Alpaca in Rose Heather for the accent. Unfortunately, I do not have enough left over for a second pom-pom. 

School was closed in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., and a snow storm was heading our way. That’s the perfect time to get in the kitchen. I took the opportunity to teach my son how to fabricate chicken wings and make a quick stock from the discarded tips. It is a good skill for a twenty-something fella to possess. He is good company in the kitchen and the end results were delish!

Saint of the Day: St. Charles of Sezze. This is a new-to-me saint, but I fell in love with him immediately. St. Charles worked as a shepherd as a child. He joined the Franciscan order as a lay brother. His ability to read or write was limited so he served the order as a cook, porter and gardener. I read where he was described as “an accident waiting to happen”, starting a huge kitchen fire while cooking onions! What’s not to love about this man! There’s a little ReginaMary in this fella! St. Charles’ desire to be poor and to serve the poor made him a blessing to many. I could not find his patronage mentioned anywhere in my readings. Rest assured I will remember St. Charles the next time I forget the rolls under the broiler!

    Love the scarfs and your knitted hat, loved the colours.. And always good to teach cooking skills, and that tip sounds a great one Regina, I hope you are all snug as I hear that snow storm was brutal in many parts of the USA..
    Loved the Mug… And so pleased Carver is not eating your creations 🙂 🤣…

  4. I knit scarves in high school and lost my desire to knit more though that light scarf looks like it would be worth the time. Beautiful colors in the hat. Could you use what leftovers with another yarn I similar colors for another pompom?
    Learning kitchen skills is never wasted.
    Love that mug. I wonder if I can find one with a miniature schnauzer?
    We have a winter weather advisory for tomorrow and the powers that be already cancelled school! Today was the only day the kids went to school all this week.
    How did you teach Carver to not eat your knitted creations ? Asking for a friend…

    1. Hahaha!! Patti, you make me laugh! Carver wasn’t taught, I had to hide all the things! Now that he is two, he is becoming a very good boy. I did see a travel mug with a schnauzer! I’ll look for a link! We are expecting a little more snow tomorrow. I love it! Teachers and parents getting crazy because they don’t want to lose their spring break, but I have to work so it doesn’t have the same impact. As for the pom-pom, I could use the remains of the pink yarn to make one. That might look good.

      1. Yes, that puppy looks angry. 😠
        Puppy teeth are the worst! I was ready to drive the 5 hours back to where we got her after the first couple of weeks of biting. But she was just too cute…when she would snuggle up to me a fall asleep. But some days I still think about it.

  9. I haven’t played an immersive video game since playing all the Myst series. Loved those.

    Sorry about your pompom! Maybe you need a faux fur one instead? That Orion is a gorgeous colorway.

    I always loved playing in the kitchen with my kids. They’re coming over to make dinner on Sunday, if this ridiculous ice ever goes away. We’ve had quite a week, with snow, freezing rain, thaw, more ice on top of snow/ice, and WIND. Ready for it to go!

    1. My son thinks he can download that game from the PS store. I love the music. I really loved the yarns I used on the hat, but the stitch pattern was tedious. Carver agrees that a faux fur pom pom would be better since it doesn’t look like a ball!! 🤣 If I can be honest, I love the cold when it is supposed to be cold. I bundle up in my woolens and laugh at the world!

  10. Video game world is mistery to me but despite have been a bit lost in the first part of the post , I loved it and so I do love the scarf and hat and envy that travel mug. Going down to memory lane now😉

  12. I was going to say hurrah for Carver, but alas, not quite yet. On that front, Bandit actually sat on command today…outside while staring at the geese on the golf course. Maybe it was the 55 degree weather that caused it, but there may be hope!

    1. My son downloaded the game from the PS Store for me! It only cost $15 (compared to $70 for the disc on amazon) This game is so beautiful!!!!! Thank you for your compliment. I look at my knits with a very harsh eye. Writing and sharing them with others is a way for me to overcome that negative voice.
      Hey, maybe the birds will find the yarn scraps after they work their way through Carver’s system! ewwww…

  16. That’s why doggos are so cute – how could we ever stay mad at those litle faces?? I can confirm it doesn’t work quite so well for our bird.
    I love the look of the hat with and without a pompom so maybe Carver was just making a design choice? The leftover strands hanging on for dear life did make me chuckle though.

  17. The color blocks on your scarf is very pretty. I have discovered that I need at least 5 or 6 stitches for my borders and that tho I love the seed stitch, tho the double seed stitch might work better, that the garter stitch does a better job. But we use what works best for us :).

    The stitch on your hat (which is beautiful) , is like the one I did for the dandelion stitch on the head band and cowl. Yeah it’s one I had to pay attention to, making sure I didn’t snug it up as I knit it. But it looks very nice.

    Love the tumbler, it’s is so pretty.

  18. This might sound weird, but when I see that scarf – I just want to bury my face in it! It looks soooo soft and cozy. Hoping you are enjoying February so far and that it isn’t too cold up there – but at least you have those cozy knits if it is!
