Let me tell you a story about Slinkmeister, Junior and Bob. It began quite innocently with the arrival of a Slinky for my desk. Slinkmeister was the favorite plaything with the kids at school. He was sent slinking down stairs, chairs, desks and places I would rather not mention, always to return to my desk safe and sound. He was stretched and spun and twirled, but never a complaint was uttered. His favorite job was holding notes and bus passes for the kids; making him feel very important. Then one dark day Slinkster disappeared. No sign of him anywhere. It was a sad day for everyone. Flyers went up around the school and kids came in everyday hoping to see him sitting in his usual spot waiting for someone to play with him. Days went by; then weeks. One morning I arrived to find a box left on my desk from a colleague. Inside, a shiny new slinky. Granted, nothing can take the place of ‘the meister’, but we welcomed Junior to the family. As if trying to lift our spirits, Junior sang when he slunk. His little coils always sparkled. But Junior knew he could never fill the shoes of Slinkmeister. A few days passed when a student entered the office with a box in her hand. Inside another shiny bright slinky. Bob. Junior and Bob were fast friends. Brothers almost. Together they sit on our desks bringing smiles to the kids faces. Like the Slinky before them, they have seen every nook and cranny of the building. They are selflessly enduring the stairs, step ladders, desks and lockers knowing they are making the children happy.
Then the rumors started. Terrible rumors that sent chills down everyone’s spine. I would look at Junior and Bob and they appeared to be shaking. Was Slinkmeister kidnapped? What kind of torture has he endured? Is he outside freezing while some sicko makes him slink down frozen steps? Is he being stretched beyond recognition, never to slink again. Oh the horror of it all! If the kidnappers are reading this (which I highly doubt, but I could not afford an ad on a milk carton), I am offering a handsome reward for the safe return of the Slinkmeister. No questions asked, no police and I promise not to beat you with my shoe. Just bring him back to the desk where he belongs…do it for the children. (cue the music).

Lovin’ the way this scarf is working up! The yarn is perfect for cables.

Now that I have conquered “the sweater”, I am diving head first into the next on my list-“Swellligant Scarf” from Debbie Stoller’s “Son of a Stitch ‘n Bitch”. I love this pattern, I love this yarn. Here is an early shot of the project. See how the nice twist of the yarn shows of the stitch definition? As for the color? Scrumptrelescent! It is called ‘Zinfandel’. Anything named after a wine is ok in my book! I suddenly feel thirsty. Is 11am too early for a glass of wine? Cool thing about this pattern is that you can knit and sip without fear of screwing things up. ;D

Thanks to all the encouragement from my friends-especially Maven, Nathalie and Sue Mc.-I finished the sweater for my husband. My concerns about the freakishly large looking neckline were quickly dispelled when I knit up the seed stitch border. I washed, blocked it, and inspected my ends to make sure all were worked in neatly. After smelling it and rubbing it against my boys cheeks (it was buttery soft alpaca) I wrapped it and left it on his pillow. I did the final touches in the afternoons before he arrived home from work so he was not aware it was near completion. When he opened it he was thrilled! Trying it on right away he bagan parading around the house showing the boys. He declared “I love it”, planted a big sloppy wet one on me and started planning outfits around it. He kept saying “I feel so European”.
After all the fretting and doubt, I have completed the project and cannot wait to start another. I feel so much better about myself as a knitter and will definitely use this experience as a reminder to keep on keepin’ on! I have been taking notes since I began knitting but mostly about the yarn, guage, and the likes. I think I should add a section on my person experiences so I can reflect on them and hopefully use them as a reminder of the hurtles and hang-ups I have over come. Oh my! I sound like a grown up again. I cannot wait for school to start so I can hang with the middle school kids and regain my ‘tween’ mentality!
Once again, thank you to all my knitting friends for pushing me to see this through. #
My oldest son wants to go cross-country in an RV. Personally, I would like that as well. We don’t have an RV so I asked my friend Sue some questions about renting one. Sue and her family own Interlake RV Park in Rhinebeck, NY, about 10 minutes from our home in the village. She was very quick to offer us the chance to stay for a day or two at her site in one of the many rentals they have on the property. I am telling you, this is such a cool place. We have our own RV on our own site with 4 bunk beds, a master bedroom, full bath, eating area, sitting area and kitchen. There is a screened-in porch off the entrance that is furnished with comfortable Adirondack style chairs and a patio set for 4. A few feet away from the porch is a gas grill and barbecue pit. I think the first thing that struck us was how spotless the rental was. Seriously, the sliding doors leading you inside were so crystal clear that I walked right into them, knocking my eye glasses right off my head! Ha! I fooled so feelish. If I could take a picture of my nose and cheek print I would; even at the expense of my pride.
I have added some pictures of the lake area, but they really do not show the natural beauty of the area.
Dig this! I saw a Blue Heron, Cedar Waxwings and (drum roll…) a Kingfisher. I have a sharp pencil and my field guide is open so look out!
Thank you Susan and Tina for providing us with an AWESOME get away. We love you!
