The Eagle Has Landed

Well, not exactly. While I am, at times, a space cadet and my blogger name is Cosmicknitter, I am not going to write about the lunar landing.

Some of my favorite things in the whole wide world are birds of prey. Hawks, owls and eagles. When I see a hawk soaring, it stops me in my tracks. I have been known to hear a call from inside the house and run out to see a red-tailed hawk blast forth from a tree. They are wonderful. I have always loved the Bald Eagle best. For most of my life the only time I saw one was in captivity at a local raptor center. The bird was in captivity, not me. Recently, having some time on my hands, I took a drive to the Rhinecliff Landing. This is a little park and boat launch on the Hudson River about two miles from my home. Instantly upon parking, I spied two mature bald eagles soaring over the river-“catching a thermal” as my daddy would say. They were magnificent, breathtaking and beautiful. I opened the sun roof of my car as they passed overhead. I could see their eyes and make out their feathers. I felt so much joy I wanted to cry! Eagles are making a comeback in my area. They used to be more common, but their numbers dwindled. One of the challenges in preserving our eagle population is protecting them from the Amtrak and Metro-North trains that run on the east side of the Hudson and the cargo trains that run on the west. When my boys were small, and I was a young inexperienced mother, I learned that fair does not mean equal. What if my youngest cried “that’s not fair” when his older brother stayed up later than he did, should I have kept him up later because they needed to be equal because fair=equal? Absolutely not. Even if they were closer in age, one needed much more sleep than the other. Fair does not mean equal.

On that note, here is my soap box. Can we please stop electing public officials who believe that the designation of bathrooms is a burning issue of national importance that has to be addressed in the first week of office? Give me a h*cking break.

Saint of the Day: St. Angela Merici, +1540. My husband told me about her this morning. She is a Third Order Franciscan! St. Angela, at the age of 57 (two years older than I am) organized a group of 12 girls to help her in catechetical work. Four years later the group had increased to 28. She formed them into the Company of Saint Ursula (patroness of medieval universities and venerated as a leader of women) for the purpose of re-Christianizing family life through solid Christian education of future wives and mothers. My husband knew I would love this Saint because he understands how much I value individuals who respect our girls and devote their lives to educating and forming young ladies in body, mind and soul.

  1. That bowl is gorgeous! A fantastic piece!
    I love seeing the hawks in my area. We get some big ones as we are between a large area of conservation land and what used to be a dairy farm. I am always in awe watching them overhead.
    I’m right with you on the bathroom thing. The job loss stuff has me pretty upset too. So many people being hurt with no consideration to that side of it.
    I love hearing about the Saints. Thanks for sharing them with us:)

    1. Hi hon!! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. There is something about the birds that just speak to me. I don’t know. All of the policies governing bathrooms and athletics and everything else is weird to me because I see it through the middle/high school experience. It is so transient and confused. I can’t imagine making policies (especially federal) on something that in my sector can be so fickle. The older I get, the more the saints resonate to me. They were willing to sacrifice all things for others and now, people want to sacrifice all others for their things.

    1. Oh! We have a restaurant here (Gaby’s) that makes the BEST margaritas. One day after work, my friend said “Oh, you have to have it with Petrone!” I got hives all over my face. YES, it’s true!! From that point on, I still to the house brand.

      2. I LOVE way upstate. That is the real upstate! I get news briefs in my email and they often refer to Westchester County as upstate. C’mon, man!! We take a holiday to Orwell or Ithaca each year (in the winter…). I really do love upstate!

      3. It was a great place to grow up. Before COVID I went back a couple times a year to visit my family. It’s definitely been a while.

      4. So you aren’t far from Pulaski. We have rented a cottage on a small lake there. We spend time knitting (me), writing and praying! Our pup loves going out on the lake in a canoe.

  5. No Bald Eagles here across the pond. My lovely, lamented friend was a bird enthusiast and whilst in his company I often saw him stop and point to a Red Kite in the sky. I couldn’t see the difference between that and any other brownish bird myself. I’m much more interested in the pretty garden birds – Robin and Blue Tit, Waxwing and Dunnock.
    I, too, am finding social media a mixed blessing and I’m going to check out Katinka’s blog, thanks for the recommendation.

  6. What a gorgeous bowl, and I love your blog! Your posts are like chats, they meander along just like conversations with friends. 😁 We have two bald eagles that live here, I think it was last winter that they ate a deer on the gold course just off the cul de sac! They spent the day there and we got photos, with the telephoto lens!! They were HUGE and a bit scary close up!

  8. What a fabulous bird. We have red kites soaring close to us though they are nowhere near the size or have the majesty of eagles. I love your bowl, it’s stunning. I do like artisan pottery, it makes me feel closer to the clay, if that makes any sense at all. Keep up the daily saints – they remind me of the stories we had in school. I do always check them out and was alarmed to see that Angela dyed her hair with soot as it was too beautiful. This is (amongst many other reasons) why I will never even approach sainthood! 😀

  10. I’m also fascinated by birds of prey. My HS biology teacher recently retired and is doing his time kayaking (warm months), hiking, all the while birding with his camera. He had taken so many magnificent photos and shared them on Facebook. It’s awesome to see eagles coming back to habitats they haven’t been seen in for decades.

  11. I’ve only seen birds of prey from afar. We have tiny, noisy birds that perch close to our window at times – and they mostly inspire joy, not awe – but I have no qualms pausing whatever I’m doing at that moment to watch them until they’re off again. 🙂
    That bowl is swoonworthy, by the way. ❤️

      2. Recently, we had a red tail drop down into the small Japanese Maple right in front of our bedroom window. I think it was snatching a titmouse that was visiting our feeder. I yelled something very scientific like “holy sh*t! holy f*ckin sh*t!” Classy, I know, but it was WILD!
